The quality parameters of emulsions, suspensions and dispersions are:
Smallest droplet size – smallest ratio of droplet surface area to droplet volume
Narrow particle size distribution – most of the droplets at or below the target size and no "tails" on the distribution graph
The benefits include higher stability (longer shelf life), sterilisation by filtration (for medical suspensions), higher efficacy (absorption), controlled release, odour and flavour masking and, often, lower production cost.
SFP homogenizer's excel at efficiently producing emulsions, suspensions and dispersions with droplets and particles in the size range from a few nanometers to a few micrometers and very narrow particle size distributions. This is accomplished by three different physical mechanisms:
Impingement on entry to the nozzle area
High liquid shear in the nozzle
Sudden pressure drop upon discharge
The following unique SFP features enable the user to create emulsions and dispersions with smallest particles sizes and narrowest particle size distributions in the smallest number of passes:
High, Very High and Ultra High Pressure Homogenizers, to maximise the intensity of the process
Exceptionally wide range of pressure, for maximum versatility
Precise control of the pressure throughout the range, and constant pressure once set, for narrowest particle size distribution, reproducibility and scalability
Sophisticated temperature control systems, including pre- and post-cooling or heating, to preserve product integrity
The table below illustrates.
(1) Preheating to 80°C (lipid melt temperature) is possible.
